Great Twig Mate
My friend Sue is the quintessential sort of green-thumb gardener. She doesn't have any formal gardening qualifications, but she can identify most plants and can make just about anything grow.
Many years ago she and I were in Melbourne, and were walking along one of the streets, when we came upon a flower vendor selling flowers from a pavement stall.
In a bucket, amongst the flowers, Sue spotted some Tortured Willow.
She decided to buy it, and told the seller that it would grow. He disagreed - Tortured Willow is used in flower arrangements, which is why he was selling it - but Sue was quite certain.
Therefore I got to carry this, quite large, branch of Tortured Willow through the streets of Melbourne, on the way back to our car - I do try to be a (very old-fashioned!) gentleman in my behaviour.
As we were walking along the street a young man walked past us and, as he did so, he said, "Great twig mate".
[Of course, being of a somewhat "sensitive" nature, I was rather embarrassed by the comment.]
Nonetheless, we took the "twig" to Sue's home, she planted it ... and, over the course of the many years since then, it grew
... and grew ...
... and ...
I think you get the idea.
[And, after all these years, "Great twig mate" brings back fond memories rather than embarrassment!]
